Foreign Films I Can’t Get Enough Of

Like most people, I love watching movies. I am a real home-buddy so watching movies and series are one of the things that I like to do. It’s like reading a book but with sound, picture, basically a movie. 😀

I love all sorts of movie genres but I stay away from fantasy and superhero stuff. It just doesn’t interest me at all. But I don’t have anything against people who love those kinds of movies.

Anyhow this blog entry is about the foreign films that I love so much that I watched them more than 5 times. Yes, I counted. This list is in no particular order. And if you haven’t watched any of these movies there might be some *SPOILERS*, you’ve been warned.

Y Tu Mamá También (And Your Mother Too)

y tu mama tambien

I am a sucker for coming-of-age movies and this one is. It is a Mexican drama film. I don’t want to give away so much because it is really a good movie. It has a simple plot, it’s like some everyday ordinary life situations. I like Gael García Bernal, I think he’s really good. I really enjoyed watching this one. It explores old and new friendships, relationships, attraction and how all these can complicate life. And it’s not that easy to run away from it. It also showed how a friendship can die and how one handles a terminal illness, enjoy life and do something that is out of the norm, in a way. I like the idea of going on a trip someplace that I’ve never been to, which they did in this movie. It showed the ups and downs. As you can notice, I am really careful not to give the story away. Watch it! It’s really good.

Voces Inocentes (Innocent Voices)

This is an El Salvadorian war film. This is based on a true story during the Salvadorian Civil War. It is a film about the military use of children. It is a sad movie, but very interesting. I cried the first time I watched this. It is a captivating story. It is a pretty heavy movie. I had so many weak moments while watching this.

This movie is based on the autobiography of Cielo Latini. It is an Argentine movie. I saw this on Netflix and read the synopsis. What caught my attention is the meeting on an online dating site part and I was sold. I watched it. The female lead is battling anorexia by choice, she wanted to prove something and she’s documenting her “progress” in her blog. Upon watching it, it is really not an online dating site. It is more YM or Yahoo chat kinda thing. They met in a group chat of some sort. The female lead is a teenager and the dude she fell in love with is 9 years older than her.

I am a sucker for mature and responsible men. I was thinking, in the beginning, I thought the relationship won’t be sexual. That it’ll be pure friendship. But yeah, they’re both attractive so I guess it is bound to happen. The girl fell hard for the dude. Something that I can relate to. She went mental, meaning non-stop emails, messages and calls. And yeah, I’ve been guilty of that. 😀 It is a good movie. I don’t want to give too much away.

Amores Perros (Love’s A Bitch)

This a Mexican drama thriller anthology film that I really enjoyed watching. It is a movie that consists of 3 distinct stories that are kind of co-related in a way. If I have to rate the stories, my number 1 will be the first one (Octavio y Susana), then the 3rd one (El Chivu y Maru) then the 2nd (Daniel y Valeria).

The stories are so complex and deep. Very very interesting. Again, it’s like ordinary life events, the storytelling is really good. The stories revolved on dogs. And I love dogs, that’s why I watched this in the first place. It is a movie that will make you think.

This movie is the first installment of  Alejandro González Iñárritu’s (director & producer of this film) “Trilogy of Death”. It is followed by 21 Grams and Babel. Both movies that I also really really like. Like, so much. 😀

These are the 4 movies that came to my head instantly when I was thinking of writing this post. Will edit this again to add some of my other favorites once I remember them. 😀 I know, I didn’t really do a good job narrating the plots of these movies, but as I’ve said that I don’t want to spoil them too much. Because unlike me, most people hate spoilers. And you can ask me anytime about these movies if you’re interested in watching them.
